SPOUSAL SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION:
Canadian Citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their Spouse for Permanent residence of Canada. A person with whom you are legally married. Canada does not recognize polygamy (you can only be married to one spouse at any one time)
SPONSOR: Canadian citizen or permanent resident seeking immigration benefits on behalf of his or her partner.
You can sponsor your spouse if:
You’re at least 18 years old
You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada
If you’re a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent resident.
You can’t sponsor someone if you’re a permanent resident living outside Canada.
You’re able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
you can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor
For Sponsorship of spouse you do not need to show any financial requirement / any prove a minimum income to sponsor a spouse to Canada.
Sponsor must need to show:
Full financial support for three years beginning on the date that permanent residence is granted.
Enough financial resources to provide financial support for themselves, their family, as well as their partner’s family.
Financial resources includes room, board, clothing, utilities, personal items such as shampoo and toothpaste, fuel, household goods, dental care, and any medical care not already provided by the public health system. For example: if a partner has a dependent child that has a dependent child, the sponsor must demonstrate they have enough income to provide for all their basic needs.
EVIDENCE OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP:
You must require strong evidence of your relationship which includes but not limited to:
Evidence of joint bank account or other financial accounts
Evidence of joint residential lease
Real estate mortgage or purchase agreement
Affidavits from people with personal knowledge that your relationship is genuine
Any other evidence that can prove the authenticity of your relationship
CAN I SPONSOR A SPOUSE WHILE LIVING OUTSIDE CANADA:
If you are a Canadian permanent resident living outside of Canada, you are not eligible to sponsor a partner to Canada.
Only permanent residents living in Canada can sponsor a spouse to Canada.
If you are a Canadian citizen living outside of Canada, spouse sponsorship is possible but you must establish the intention to live in Canada once your partner becomes a Canadian resident.
PROCESS TO APPLY:
Documentation is done for both the sponsored and the sponsoring person – it is very detailed and cumbersome information
Any incorrect or missing information deems the application dismissed
Sponsorship application is a two staged process.
In the first stage, sponsor’s eligibility is evaluated.
Upon completion of sponsor’s eligibility to sponsor, applicant’s eligibility and admissibility are assessed.
